Advocacy and Policy Engagement

Why Advocacy Matters

Mental health is often overlooked in national and regional development agendas, despite being critical to productivity, education, and social stability. By amplifying voices, engaging decision-makers, and shaping policies, we create a system where individuals and communities have the resources they need to heal and thrive.

1. Policy Integration

We work with government ministries, local leaders, and international partners to advocate for the integration of mental health into health, education, and development policies.

Globally, mental health is underfunded and often overlooked in policy frameworks. In Rwanda and much of Africa, the stigma surrounding mental health adds another barrier, leaving many individuals and communities without the care they need. This neglect affects not just individuals but entire communities, reducing productivity, weakening social cohesion, and holding back economic development.

“Before Build2Heal started engaging with our community, mental health was never part of our local development discussions. Through their advocacy workshops, we now see how mental health is linked to education, employment, and family well-being. Today, we are better equipped to make decisions that prioritise the dignity and recovery of our people.”

Jean Bosco

Community Leader, Rwanda

“As a policymaker, I have attended many sessions, but what Build2Heal does is different. They bring real stories from people in the community, backed with data, to show us why mental health matters for national development. Their advocacy has inspired us to push for stronger policies and more funding for mental health in Rwanda.”

Mwizerwa Eric

Local Government Representative

“I used to think that mental health issues were a personal weakness, but after joining Build2Heal’s community dialogues, I realised it is a social issue that needs collective action. Because of their advocacy, I no longer feel ashamed to seek help, and I believe our government is finally listening.”
